Messenger Bag Style
I’ve never owned a car.
This was initially a financial decision. Directly out of college, I didn’t have enough money to cover rent, a social life, and a car payment. Within a year of graduating, I was saving money to go live in Europe and had even less reason to make the investment.
Upon returning, the financial reasons remained. In addition, the new existence of shared car systems in a neighborhood where those cars were abundant made acquiring a car even less of a necessity. I deliberately chose to return to that neighborhood to maintain that lifestyle; I would much rather spend the cash on other things.

However, it took only one experience on my bike with a shoulder purse to realize I had to have a messenger bag. In my usual picky fashion, this took at least a month of constant online hunting, checking out Fossil’s line in person, cursing Nordstrom for not having anything I liked, and pondering the options on Etsy.

I even considered a very plain version at Anthropologie but discovered upon looking in the mirror that I was utterly dwarfed by the thing. Then, at Macy’s of all places, I stumbled upon this reasonably sized bag by Rough Roses (warning–cheesy music and flash); their web site makes them look like an unfortunate off-shoot of Ed Hardy.
But I love the bag anyway.

I’m picky about bags too! I’ve literally spent over a year looking for the perfect one. Yours looks great :) Always nice to hear about someone living successfully without a car: i don’t plan to have one when i move out of my parents house for as long as possible!
Love it! And you look great–love the whole ensemble.
I used to be a little obsessed with messenger bags. When I was in school and had to lug around my laptop and my notebook and all that other stuff, it was my bag of choice. I travel a little lighter now, but I still have a fondness for this style of bag…
Love the new bag! My sister swears by messenger bags, although I tend to stick to gigantic purses to tote things around. But then again, I don’t bike a lot of places. ;) I always love the look of a messenger bag–I just struggle to find one that fits into my personal style without being the odd piece out. lol!
Perfect! And I loved this post, for all it says and all is reveals about you, dear.
Have a wonderful rest of the week,

Wow, no kidding about the cheeze on that site … but the bag is a glory to behold! What a great find.
First of all… I love your shirt/dress! I had the same problem riding my bike with a shoulder bag so I got a basket. Works perfectly for me since I am super picky about my bags too. What woman isn’t?
Nice sized bag, these are hard to find w/o being huge. I love the color – really goes w/everything. you look sassy as usual!
that’s awesome, i owned a car once, it was more hassle than it was worth, when it broke down it was in the shop for 3 weeks, and i totally forgot i had a car. needless to say, its gone.
to tell the truth i’d rather spend $120 (insurance) a month on shoes, $100 a month (gas) on clothes and $350 (parking) on well, lots of things!
I’m jealous of your ability to be carless- I’ve always wondered what city living would be like but have lived in rural & suburban places most of my life. I didn’t have a car in college and had access to the metra into Chicago, but it was weird to me that I could get to downtown Chicago more easily than I could to a neighboring suburb. I wasn’t a fan of walking to get groceries either. We have a sad number of cars (people tend to give them to my husband) for two people so as much as I dream of that day, I think it would take us living overseas to even contemplate such a thing again.
Very you! It looks great and I love how it ties in perfectly with your outfit!
Beautiful bag, and so practical too! You’d never guess from looking at it that it’s associated with Ed Hardy-esque ickiness.
This is absolutely gorgeous….love the style lots! Have a lovely merry happy day and love to you!
A great bag is oh-so-hard to find! This one looks perfect.
Oh, Ambika! I LOVE it… and with that dress? You look killer.
Adorable bag, and what a great solution!! That’s awesome that you’ve never owned a car. Sometimes the convenience is just NOT worth it.
