Sailor Wedding

The last of my circle of friends are tying the knot and, appropriately given where his family has a vacation home, the wedding will be happening on the water.

That is, the ceremony and reception are booked on the Argosy, a four hour shindig that we’re all taking bets will end up with someone overboard.  Because I’m a dork and always think about these things months in advance, I’ve decided a new dress is in order–perhaps on my favorite sailor theme (I wanted to wear my LBD but found out that’s the color for the bridesmaids’ dresses.)

This Milly dress from Revolve has the nautical rope thing going for it but looks a little shapeless.

The sailor feel is a little more subtle with the bright green skirt of this dress from Lulu’s but it looks comfortable as well as adorable.

This dress from Mango might be my fave though I’m worried it looks a bit casual.  Love that neckline, though.  A trip to the east side might be in order to check it out in person…

After the Thin Man – The Robes of Nora Charles

One of the very first movies I added to my queue when I joined Netflix was The Thin Man.  I’ve never read Dashiell Hammett but I think that’s because the movies are delightful enough on their own.

AFTER_THE_THIN_MAN-3

The sequel, After the Thin Man, takes place over the course of only a few days so there isn’t much to see in the way of clothing.  The costume designer clearly had to settle for having fun with Nora Charles’ sleepwear, her robes looking much closer to evening wear than something you’d wear to cover up your nightie.

AFTER_THE_THIN_MAN-1

This might have been my favorite, worn after she woke up Nick in the middle of the night with a craving for eggs.  The bow is just too much.

AFTER_THE_THIN_MAN-0

She’s then wearing this robe with fur cuffs the following morning.  As you can see, Nick had to settle for one robe for the night.

AFTER_THE_THIN_MAN-2

While the fur is a nice touch, it’s the crazy pleating at the sleeve that really caught my eye.

If only sleepwear looked like this now.

Catalog Temptations

Despite having a lot less space, visions of home decor still dance in my head.  Given I’m on the mailing list for half the decorating catalogs, I get lots of fodder for those visions.

This quatrefoil tray and Cavaillon mirrors make me feel like I must be on a French kick–though that’s never really been my taste.  Both from Ballard Designs.

Then I’m completely taken with these industrial looking wine racks and playful hopskotch rug…and know my taste is no where near settled.  Both from CB2.

Once I’m in a bigger place, I’m sure I’ll figure out a way to combine everything…

100% Thrifted

I’ve never been able to add a pic to the awesome 100% thrifted group.  It’s always the shoes that get me.

P1080943

Regularly haunting ebay, which I’d mostly given up on in the past year, turned up these boots I’ve been coveting for a while.  So I was finally able to add a pic to the pool.

And yes, I added the lace to the neckline.  It’s an addiction!

Lace, Pale Favorites

neutral faves

My latest favorites seem so wintry–totally inappropriate given the gorgeous, sunny weather and blue skies Seattle’s been enjoying lately.

Seattle

I know these neighborhood posters are nothing new, but I had no idea one had been done of Seattle!

I think I’ve lived in six nine of these so far…

The Science of Sleep

While I wasn’t won over by the movie itself, the visuals of The Science of Sleep were amazing.

science of sleep

This is to be expected given the director, Michel Gondry, is well known for his music videos.

scienceofsleep

And of course, Gael Garcia Bernal is awfully nice to look at.

THE_SCIENCE_OF_SLEEP-0

But it was really the use of fabric crafts that caught my eye, entire scenes sometimes made up of yarn and cotton.  Charlotte/Stephanie has a cupboard stuffed with it that I can’t help envying.

So even though I can’t say I liked it, it was definitely a visual feast.

Anna Fraser & Anti-Valentines

Anna Fraser contacted me about her recently opened Etsy shop and I was instantly taken with her watercolors.

annafraser2

While some of her images are simply sweet, others are more troubling and sad.

I figured I’d wait until after Valentine’s Day to post them.

Think Geek

I read about this tee online somewhere and had to have it.

geek tee

I’m no coder but I’ve torn my hair out trying to figure out the color themes for this blog–or the backgrounds for pics, and on and on.

Hey, it’ll make a good sleep/gym tee.

Fun Hoodies

I’m a sucker for hoodies, as demonstrated by my inability to stop embellishing them left and right.  I especially love seeing the fun stuff other people do with them.

aviator nation

Aviator Nation has this whole 1970s, surfer vibe going that reminds me of Dogtown and Z-boys, the first Red Hot Chili Peppers album, and the thrill of finding an original Ocean Pacific tee at the thrift store.  Expensive but super cute.

toast hoodie2toast hoodie

The hoodies at Toast have a whole different feel, sweet and playful in unexpected fabrics.  I’ve had this shop saved to my faves for forever and really just need to buck up and order something already.

islahoodi3

And somewhere inbetween are the fun, cool hoodies by Isla New York–who I think I stumbled upon via Twitter.

I would seriously get one of each if I could justify it.

Chair Fail

A chair came with the very small desk my mom gave me ages ago–the desk where my sewing machine initially sat and which is now the home for my laptop, stationary, and whatever DVDs Netflix happens to send my way.

P1080007

As you can see from the pic, it’s gone a bit concave over time.  Plus, the fabric was never to my liking so I decided to pad it up and recover it.

P1080009

This is what dwelled underneath.  I covered it in a basic gray canvas, nothing too exciting–and even with additional padding it’s gone concave again.  Sigh.

I guess I’ll just have to have a professional take a look at it.

Accent Pillows

I don’t know that I’m inclined to make pillows (for the 3rd time) for my tiny little loveseat.  That doesn’t stop me from getting tempted when I encounter ones that appeal to me.

SAN-FRANCISCO-PILLOW_300JAIPUR-PILLOW_300BLUE-&-GREEN-KALEIDOSCOPE_300

The selection at Modern Chic Home is pretty amazing, despite the sigh-worthy prices.

Gracie May’s fabric choices are super tempting, too.

Pops of color against a neutral background–nothing better.

kaboogie

Kaboogie doesn’t seem to have any home items stocked at the moment but, like most Etsy sellers, I bet if you asked nicely, you could get a custom order done up.

Vintage Bed Jacket?

My awesome co-worker, the one who gave me the miles of lace to play with, stumbled upon this top in her attic and apparently thought of me.

P1080911

She said she bought it twenty or so years ago and it was vintage then.  I’m thinking early 60s, late 50s, maybe?  Any vintage mavens out there, feel free to make your best guess.

P1080914

Love all the detail–the pleats at the front, the lace at the collar, and shell buttons all the way down the back.  If it weren’t for those buttons, I’d swear this was a bed jacket.

P1080910

I’m never wearing this to bed though!

Obsessed

I’ve been listening to the Finches and Basia Bulat pretty obsessively–both discovered via Pandora.

Basia hails from Canada and has the fey kind of style I’ve admired in the past.  It doesn’t hurt that she’s ridiculously talented with a store of heartbreaking songs.

The Finches are out of San Francisco and though their debut album is two years old, I hold out hope they’ve got more in the works.

Trying to find good versions of their songs is a bit tougher but they’re worth seeking out.
